The Cruzeiro Mine, located in the Safira pegmatite district in the Eastern Brazilian pegmatite province, is one of the most important sources of gemstone and mineral specimens in the world. In 1915, this mine began operations to extract mica and was a major source during World War II. After the war, mining activities significantly declined until the 1950s, when the extraction of tourmaline (elbaite) and other minerals resumed.
