2023 Rhodochrosite Discovery | Treasures from Minas Gerais, Brazil
This April, we were honored to receive a batch of rare and beautiful Brazilian rhodochrosite from our partners in Brazil. These red crystals, understated and elegant in the absence of light, transform when exposed to sunlight, revealing their intense and vibrant color that captures the eye.
This rare and precious Brazilian rhodochrosite made its debut at the Sainte-Marie Aux Mines Mineral Show this year, instantly drawing attention. Experienced mineral collectors showed great interest in these few but exquisite treasures, eager not to miss out on such unique pieces.
2023 Discovery: Rare Rhodochrosite
This batch of rhodochrosite specimens comes from a small pocket in Coronel Murta, a town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Rhodochrosite is already quite rare in Brazil, and Coronel Murta has had little to no record of rhodochrosite mining in the past. In 2023, our skilled partners discovered a few specimens in this pocket, adding a new gem to the list of Brazilian minerals!
The Precious Mineral Treasures of Minas Gerais, Brazil
Minas Gerais is a name synonymous with rich mineral resources. Since the 17th century, the gold rush brought economic prosperity to Brazil, and the extraction of valuable economic minerals has continued to be a vital part of Minas Gerais' economy.
Located in the northeastern part of Minas Gerais, the town of Coronel Murta lies in the eastern pegmatite district of the state. The pegmatite-rich geology of this region has played a significant role in Brazil's industrial minerals, gemstones, and mineralogical history. The unique mineral characteristics of this Brazilian rhodochrosite are a direct result of this region's distinctive geology.
Brazilian Rhodochrosite with Feldspar and Mica
Brazilian rhodochrosite is extremely rare, and this 2023 discovery further highlights the rarity of this mineral. Fortunately, the specimens we acquired have high crystal integrity, with each one showcasing a unique visual appeal. The presence of associated minerals further emphasizes the uniqueness of this mining area.
Single Large Crystal: This complete large Brazilian rhodochrosite crystal is a rare find in Brazil. Its deep red color makes it a coveted piece among collectors. The mica that coexists at the base adds to the specimen’s allure, reflecting the characteristic geology of the region.
